Hardwood Care
Your new hardwood flooring is an investment as well as a work of art, so it’s essential to help it age well with proper care and maintenance! There are a few things to keep in mind, and you’ll need to incorporate them into your regular care routine. Learn more below.
Why Choose Our Hardwood Flooring
Exotic Wood Species
You’re probably familiar with pine, oak, maple, and hickory. These are, after all, some of the most common wood species used in flooring. But you aren’t limited to these common choices! Exotic hardwood has only grown in popularity and has become more readily available as a result. This includes species such as tigerwood, Brazilian cherry, Brazilian teak, Brazilian walnut, and so many more! You’ll love the rich, unique appearance of these species.
Before your installation
Hardwood Flooring Installation
You want a problem-free installation. To help ensure one, here are a few things to do before our installers arrive. First, make sure you know who’s removing your existing flooring. If you wish, the installer will do it. If not, you should make arrangements to have it removed. Next, know who’s moving the furniture. Decide in advance if you want to take on the responsibility or if you want the installer to handle it. Either way, be sure to remove all fragile items from the room. Measure door clearances before you have your hardwood flooring installed. If the new flooring is thicker than your existing flooring, door bottoms may rub. Plan in advance to have someone shave or saw the correct amount off the bottom of each door so it does not drag. If you’re planning to paint, wallpaper, or do any other remodeling in the room, it’s best to do it before your hardwood flooring is installed. Keep extra paint to touch up any post-installation nicks.
During Your Installation
- Current flooring: A professional installer will evaluate your flooring and subfloor construction and will know whether to remove the existing flooring or install on top of it. If it’s removed, the installer knows how much preparation is needed for the subfloor—like use of a leveling compound—or if a new subfloor should be placed over the old one.
- Moisture testing: Proper acclimation and moisture testing are required so floors won’t cup, buckle, or develop gaps later. Your installer will follow this critical step for either solid or engineered hardwood.
- Installation: Using the proper equipment, your installer will nail or glue boards in place, working from multiple cartons to create consistency in the look of the floor. When encountering unforeseen problems, experienced installers know how to solve them.
- Overall quality: Professional installation ensures that your flooring will look beautiful and perform well over time. It’s a good idea to check with us directly to find out if there are other actions we recommend before installation. Just call a member of our friendly sales staff.
Care & Maintenance
Routine Care
Sweep, vacuum, and dry mop your hardwood flooring on a regular basis. Make sure to check with your manufacturer’s care and maintenance guide, in addition to their list of approved vacuum cleaners, before caring for your new floors. If your flooring needs more than just a dry surface clean, use a manufacturer-approved cleaning solution and follow their guidelines. If you find your floors need a periodical deep cleaning, always hire a local professional floor cleaning company. For recommendations, speak with one of our store representatives!
Spills & Stains
Occasional spills and stains are inevitable, especially if you have pets or kids. Most liquid spills will wipe away simply with a cloth. You’ll want to do this as quickly as possible, as hardwood flooring is not water-resistant. Other spills, such as wax or nail polish, are more complex. For these, you’ll want to consult your manufacturer’s care guidelines.
