Beautiful, versatile, and affordable
Laminate Flooring
Laminate is an affordable and versatile alternative to genuine hardwood or natural stone. It offers impressive durability and ease of care compared to its natural counterparts, making it a practical choice for any home. While not entirely water-resistant, laminate flooring closely resembles the look of real wood or stone, delivering striking beauty without the high maintenance.
Installation
Laminate flooring is easy to install due to its unique locking edges. It then “floats” above the subfloor, expanding and contracting with any climate changes in your home. Because of this, it can be installed over any other type of flooring. However, we still recommend trusting professionals with your laminate installation. Read on to learn more.
Laminate Care
Laminate is easy to care for, but it still requires a little TLC as any other flooring solution does. Regular care will prolong its appearance, functionality, and durability for many years to come!
How is laminate flooring made?
Laminate is so unique because of its layered construction. First comes the backing layer, which mainly adds balance and helps to seal away moisture. This layer is often a built-in underlayment substitute. It’s also known as the stabilizing layer. Next comes the bulk of the laminate. This is some sort of high-density material known as the core board that gives the plank its strength and stability. Then, there’s the photographic image decorative layer, which incorporates a high-quality image of hardwood or tile. Finally comes a top wear layer that protects against scratching, UV damage, and staining.
Before your installation
Laminate Flooring Installation
You want a problem-free installation. To help ensure one, here are a few things to do before our installers arrive. First, make sure you know who’s removing your existing flooring. If you wish, the installer will do it. If not, you should make arrangements to have it removed. Next, know who’s moving the furniture. Decide in advance if you want to take on the responsibility or if you want the installer to handle it. Either way, be sure to remove all fragile items from the room. Measure door clearances before you have your laminate flooring installed. If the new flooring is thicker than your existing flooring, door bottoms may rub. Plan in advance to have someone shave or saw the correct amount off the bottom of each door so it does not drag. If you’re planning to paint, wallpaper, or do any other remodeling in the room, it’s best to do it before your laminate flooring is installed. Keep extra paint to touch up any post-installation nicks.
During Your Installation
- Current flooring: Laminate flooring can be installed directly over some existing types of flooring; others will have to be removed first. Your professional installer will know the proper procedure as well as how to make the floor level and smooth.
- Moisture testing: Your installer will check for moisture in the subfloor to prevent any potential problems with buckling or cupping.
- Installation: Using the appropriate tools, the installer will cut and place the laminate planks or tiles, maintaining a gap around the floor’s perimeter to allow for expansion.
- Room shape:A professional will know how to handle any challenges caused by room irregularities and odd or tight spaces, like cabinetry or a kitchen island. It’s a good idea to check with us directly to find out if there are other actions we recommend before installation. Just call a member of our friendly sales staff.
Care & Maintenance
Routine Care
For starters, you should incorporate some preventative maintenance into your routine. First, invest in a few doormats and place them strategically throughout your home. Encourage visitors to use them to keep dirt off of your new flooring. For daily care, you need only vacuum and dry mop regularly, using products with care (make sure they’re manufacturer-approved).
Spills & Stains
Wipe away any liquid messes with a clean cloth as soon as you see them occur. While some newer laminate flooring products include waterproof finishes, most do not. Therefore, it’s essential to treat these spills right away. For more stubborn messes, see your manufacturer’s care guidelines. Laminate care will often vary by material and manufacturer; for instance, Shaw flooring includes wood, so it will require a wood-safe cleaning product.
