Tips for Choosing the Perfect Kitchen Backsplash

August 12, 2021

Choosing a kitchen backsplash should be an exciting journey. Whether you’re renovating your kitchen or building a new home, it can be easy to get bogged down in the number of choices available. Sure, you have a specific style you’d like to achieve, but there may be 2,000 different variations of it. We’ll show you a few tips to narrow down your options and help you choose the perfect kitchen backsplash to fit your needs.

Color & Material

Many people struggle to select the perfect color and material for their kitchen backsplash. Since there are so many elements in your kitchen that must play together, it’s best to purchase a sample of the backsplash you like and take it home to see how it looks.

TIP: When choosing a backsplash, make sure it complements the countertop and other finishes in your home like your fridge, oven, etc., to achieve a truly cohesive look.

Durability

When considering a backsplash option, think about your day-to-day needs. Do you tend to be a bit messy when cooking, or are you typically clean and tidy? Most likely, you’ll want a tile that can be easily cleaned and maintained. Avoid finishes that easily show fingerprints and/or dirt. It’s also a good idea to research the material so you can anticipate how it will wear over time.

For instance, most ceramic tile backsplashes tend to be low maintenance. However, stainless steel backsplashes can scratch easily.

Grout

Grout can make or break your tile backsplash in more than one way. Choosing a darker grout with a lighter tile can make a backsplash look dramatically different. Using white grout with lighter tiles will give your backsplash more of a seamless look and feel.

TIP: Keep in mind that even though white grout is a popular choice, it’s harder to keep clean. A darker grout can be way more forgiving.

Budget

Budget always plays a critical role in tile selection. If you have a tight budget, consider covering a smaller surface area. For instance, just behind the range hood is a nice economical option. You can also opt for a more inexpensive mosaic or the ever-popular subway tile. There’s a lot of options out there to fit your budgetary needs.
